Instagram iOS vs Android Captions

Last week (November 23) Instagram finally rolled out the update to their iOS app (ver 7.11) which now reduces the amount of characters from your caption that show up in your feed (and others) before you see “…. more”.  We had seen this for over a month on Android and wondered when it was going to be rolled out for good. Well here it is.

Our Instagram feed used to show the entire caption as we and others wrote it.  Now it’s being reduced to anywhere between 50 to 122 characters depending on the styling of your caption. See the examples below of what is now displayed varies from caption to caption, varies how you format the @username and #hashtag usages as well varies from iOS device to Android device. Depending on what your priority is in your caption, you will now need to be taken these differences into consideration in order to optimize your call to action and write effective captions.
