Influencers have been around for a very long time and Influencer marketing is one of the oldest tactics in the marketing trade. Just look around you. Every single medium from TV, Print, Billboards all employ Influencer Marketing one way or another. You might not even realize that you are being “Influenced” to purchase a product all thanks to Influencer marketing!
So, why is influencer marketing all the rage as compared to digital ads lately? In order to answer this we need to quickly look at how Influencer marketing has evolved over the last 75+ years. Yes you heard me correctly Influencer marketing ISN’T NEW!
Companies & brands all over the world (from small to big) have been successfully utilizing Influencers and industry leaders (in every niche) in order to promote and help sell their products and services since the dawn of consumer marketing.
Take for example one of the most successful and early Influencer Marketing strategies employed by Marlboro Cigarettes that dates back to 1954. The Marlboro Man is one of the most iconic Influencer marketing strategies that featured rugged men and cowboys to sell cigarettes in magazines, billboards and on TV. The advertisements were created to popularize Marl
Influencer Marketing Back Then
The Marlboro Man is an iconic figure used in tobacco advertising campaigns for Marlboro cigarettes in the United States from 1954 to 1999. These advertisements initially featured rugged men portrayed in a variety of roles but later primarily featured a rugged cowboy or cowboys, in nature with a cigarette. The advertisements were originally conceived as a way to popularize filtered cigarettes, which at the time were considered feminine.
So by taking a product that was perceived to be “feminine” and presenting it being used (smoked) by rugged working men & cowboys the brand was able to position and market their products as “manly”. It didn’t take long for their Influencer marketing campaign to blow up with success.
The Marlboro Man campaign is said to be one of the most brilliant advertisement campaigns of all time.
It transformed a feminine campaign, with the slogan “Mild as May”, into one that was masculine, in a matter of months. There were many faces of the Marlboro Man Influencer over the years, most of whom were prominent advertising agency male figures from the Leo Burnett Ad Agency as well as Philip Morris the company that owned the Marlboro Brand.
This is just one example of Influencer marketing back in the old days 🙂 Just about every major brand that sells products or services employs a celebrity or industry influencer who has the attention or reach of a specific demographic and thus generate massive sales due to their notoriety. Not surprising most of the male Marlboro models have all died from smoking related diseases.
Influencer Marketing Today
One of the most prominent examples of Influencer Marketing TODAY is Cristiano Ronaldo and his contract with Nike. Even if Nike recently covered up Ronaldo’s Adidas Sweater.
Ronaldo is one of the most followed social media Influencers in the world with more than 270 million followers across Instagram (103 Million), Facebook (121 Million) and Twitter (53 Million). Thanks to the Insane growth of Instagram, Ronaldo’s Instagram account grew by 65 Million Followers in 2016. More than Kobe Bryant & Kevin Durant combined).
In 2016 alone, Ronaldo’s Social Media team posted a total of 1,703 post across social media which generated $500M in value for Nike.
Those social media posts generated 2.25 billion social interactions (likes, comments, shares, retweets, videos views), per Hookit.
Nike was referenced or its swoosh logo visible in a photo or video in 347 of the posts, which had 477 million interactions.
The result: $499.6 million for Nike in media value from Ronaldo’s posts. Thats HALF A BILLION DOLLARS IN REVENUE from a SOCCER SUPERSTAR! INSANE!
WOW no wonder Nike signed Ronaldo to be their 3rd “lifetime” Nike Influencer in company history after LeBron James and Michael Jordan. Ronaldo lifetime deal is reportedly similar to James’ pact, which is worth as much as $1 billion thanks to his Social Media Influence!
So, why is Influencer Marketing all the BUZZ today?
Influencer marketing involves leveraging the social media reach, engagement, and TRUST of influencers to advertise and drive sales of products, or services. 70% of millennials are influenced to purchase in-store when compared to celebrity driven marketing campaigns.
Today most of the population is less likely to trust celebrities given all the bullshit they get paid to advertise and sell you. I’m not saying that it’s realistically any different for Influencer marketing but the general public tend to relate and TRUST influencers more than celebrities making Influencers the most desirables digital media figures to use for their marketing tactics!
It’s no secret that I was hired as Ceramic Pro Success Story and their very first Instagram Influencer in order to put their automotive protective coatings to the real daily driven test on my McLaren. Because I am a prominent figure in the automotive industry, I have the ability to influence others and market products that I have tried and tested on behalf of companies and brands. I was paid to promote their product.
My very first Influencer deal (that I accepted) with Ceramic Pro took me down to Miami during the winter months this year! Life is good when you’re getting paid to drive your McLaren!
I have been pitched by dozens of companies wanting me to represent their brands, and I have turned down many of them because I didn’t believe in their products or their products didn’t fit with my personal brand. Some people will sell out, thankfully I can pick and chose due to my success! The beautiful part of being picky about what brands I chose to work with and promote on social media, you probably can’t tell ALL the brands I have partnered with because their products & services fit in with my lifestyle so well 🙂 From what I DRIVE, to what I WEAR it all represents MY PERSONAL BRAND. This is more important that completely selling out even though I do love MONEY 🙂

It’s a lot easier than it looks. The hardest part for me was coming out of my shy shell and putting my face on Instagram. I know you might think BULLSHIT, but it’s true, I am a very shy person that really enjoys certain privacy’s of life. Slowly but surely I eased my way onto Instagram photos, videos and now I am comfortable doing stuff on Instagram stories!
