Why use a DSLR camera?

A DSLR (digital single-lens reflex) camera  is one of the best tools for creating high-quality images. The detail in your photos will be pristine and you can experiment with different settings. I use one when taking pictures for my own accounts, like @madwhips. They produce professional looking images and give you more flexibility for showcasing your brand or product. Instagram is more than a platform to share our daily lives on, it’s a full blown marketing tool.

Instagram is intended for smartphones, but you don’t have to play by the rules. Big brands are cheating the system by using using nicer cameras for their posts. As long as you are able to get that picture from the camera to your phone, you can upload it to the #1 social media marketing tool around.

Nikon is among the top camera companies and they are tired of people using their phones to capture the things they love in life just to get some likes. Nikon is trying to show us that using a smartphone is going to get you mediocre pictures. Use the right tools to get the job done correctly. I’m all for raking in the likes on Instagram and there’s certainly nothing wrong with using a phone to create posts, but using high-quality images can yield better results.

Capturing The Moment

When it comes to using a DSLR, there’s the easy way and the harder but more rewarding way to shoot. You can shoot in any of the “automatic” settings and let the camera do the work for you. This is ideal for those that don’t know what they’re doing yet. However, if you have a grasp on photography, then you already know that manual shooting gives you the freedom to be creative with your photos.

Whichever way you choose, make sure that you’re paying attention to the lighting and flash. Flash often washes out the subject and can make for a harsh image. Opt for natural lighting when you can.

Don’t be afraid to play around with the focus of the post like @lushkitchen did here:

Can’t do that with a smartphone! Also notice the use of hashtags to draw in those 6,389 likes.

Uploading

The nice thing about taking pictures with your phone is that you’re able to upload it to Instagram with ease. While uploading pictures from your DSLR is a bit more tedious, it’s definitely worth it for the high-quality images. The simplest way to do this is to sign up for a dropbox or drive. So just connect your camera to your laptop, edit it (or wait and edit on your phone), and then upload it to your dropbox. Then all you have to do is access that dropbox on your phone, save the picture to said phone, and you’re good to go!

Editing

This is where the real fun begins. Hopefully you’ve figured out your brand’s identity and can start editing your photos accordingly. If you’re really photo savvy you’ll have Photoshop or Lightroom to edit your pictures like a pro, but if not- don’t worry. You can easily download some apps to edit your pics like the majority of Instagram users. Instagram has great photo-editing features that are  easy to use too! Then start fixing up your future post.

You want to keep things natural, especially if you’re taking product posts. You don’t want people to think your product is something it’s not, so don’t overdo it. Adjust things such as contrast and sharpen just enough to bring out the detail in the subject.

You Know What To Do

Instagram is the most commonly used social media platform and with over 400 million users, it’s THE best way to market your brand. With over 400 million users, it’s also that much harder to stand out. That’s why using a DSLR camera is such a game-changer! Taking quality, detailed pictures/videos are going to give your posts a professional look. No one likes a pixelated, blurry, post. If you want more followers, you must appeal to the crowds and that means producing quality content.

We’re not saying you’ve got to ditch the smartphone. If that’s all you’ve got to work with, you can still win over the crowds if you utilize what you’ve got.

So now you can see why using a fancy DSLR camera is a great investment for your brand if you want to build it’s following on Instagram.
