There is an art to using them, but when used properly, hashtags help create brand identity. Hashtags are little pathways that lead Instagram users to your profile. The goal is to build a community around actionable hashtags. Here are the types of hashtags you should be using:
- Trending Hashtags: These hashtags are more difficult to stand out in due to their popularity and overuse, but it’s always a good idea to include one or two because you never know who will be checking the posts under that tag and stumble upon your account! Stick to the trending hashtags that are relatable to the post you’re tagging. Otherwise it would be out of place and wouldn’t make sense.
- Brand Specific Hashtags: Probably the most important of the hashtags are these guys! Find a hashtag or two that represent your brand and stick with them. The idea is that you’ll be the only one using these hashtags and so your brand will always be associated with them. For example, #Wolfmillionaire is used to represent my brand. Think of it as your brand’s signature. Always use it.
- Campaign Specific Hashtags: Use hashtags for upcoming events, contests, or sales. Get others to use it to extend the reach of the campaign. So if you have brand ambassadors they can use that campaign hashtag to form even more connections to your brand. These hashtags get people excited about your brand and the campaign going on.

When someone scrolls through your Instagram, they expect it to flow nicely. And why shouldn’t they? In your captions you can say “Link in bio” to guide people back to your website.
Make your company personable by showing your followers the people behind the brand. Maybe give insight to what goes on behind the scenes. What do you want your Instagram to reflect? What message do you want to convey to your audience? Think of those questions with every move you make on Instagram.
People are drawn to brands that are personable and that care about their followers. Starbucks does a great job of showing love for their coffee-drinking fans. They feature posts of real people enjoying their products. They even re-gram pictures from their followers! Part of creating a brand identity is interacting with your followers and building a community around your brand. It’s all about interaction.
Consistency Is Key
Unless you want to give your followers Instagram whiplash, stay consistent! Don’t begin changing your brand’s regular hashtags out of the blue. Posting pictures that have nothing to do with your brand is also a no-no. Stay reliable! People are drawn to Instagram feeds that are visually appealing. Think of each picture posted as a piece of a whole, as in, they should all fit together.
Publish posts regularly because you don’t want people to forget about you! On the other hand, don’t bombard your followers with multiple posts a day unless it’s a special occasion.
